PA to monitor media freedom by Deepal Warnakulasuriya People's Alliance media spokesman Dr. Sarath Amunugama dismissed rumours of a PA takeover of the ministries of media and internal security, but said that they would be appointing a committee to monitor as to how the free media is being controlled by the government. Dr.Amunugama said that the committee will consider a national framework for media and recommend ways to allow the media to function freely in a balanced manner. He said that the composition of the committee has not been decided. Commenting on the 'takeover' talks, he said that MP Anura Bandaranaike had suggested at the Central Committee meeting, that the two ministries be brought under PA control. As the Opposition was unhappy about how the two ministries were functioning and the suggestion were welcomed by other committee members. However, they have not decided about how and when it should be done, Dr. Amunugama said. Another PA high ranking politburo member said that only two or three in the party were calling for a takeover and that the President may not act on the suggestion. |
