Junior Athletic Nationals in Badulla June 6 to 8

The Amateur Athletic Association of Sri Lanka has drawn up plans to hold the National Junior Athletic Championships in six age groups for both boys and girls. The championships will be held on June 6, 7 and 8 at Vincent Dias Stadium in Badulla. This year, the AAA has decided to add one more age category, the under-23 in addition to under-12, under-14, under-16, under-18 and under-20.

The AAA has set standard timings for under-20 and under-23 to enable the athletes to be selected to the junior international pools. According to Bernard Perera, Assistant Secretary AAA, those selected to the pools will be granted Rs. 2,000 per month. The set timings for under-20, and under-23 for both boys and girls are as follows:

Under-20: 100 metres 10.8 (boys), 12.6 (girls), 200 metres 22.1 (b), 26.1 (g), 400 metres 49.5 (b), 59.3 (g), 800 metres 1.54.7 secs (b), 2.25.1 secs (g), 1,500 metres 3.56.2 secs (b), 4.41.3 secs (g), 5,000 metres 14.37.6 secs (b), 17.30.8 secs (g), 10,000 metres 30.48.5 secs (b), 37.07.1 secs (g), 110/100 metre hurdles 15.1 secs (b), 15.0 secs (g), 400 metres hurdles 55.5 secs (b), 65.7 secs (g), high jump 2.03 metres (b), 1.71 metres (g), long jump 6.92 metres (b), 5.71 metres (g), triple jump 14.69 metres (b), 12.17 metres (g), pole vault 4.80 metres (b), putt shot 16.34 metres (b), 15.80 metres (g), discus throw 52.03 metres (b), 52.52 metres (g), javelin throw 68.34 metres (b), 52.07 metres (g).

Under-23: 100 metres 10.7 secs (b), 12.2 secs (g), 200 metres 22.7 secs (b), 25.4 secs (g), 400 metres 48.5 secs (b), 57.5 secs (g), 800 metres 1.52.8 secs (b), 2.12 secs (g), 1,500 metres 3.52.1 secs (b), 4.34.3 secs (g), 5,000 metres 14.21.7 secs (b), 17.02.2 secs (g), 10,000 metres 30.13.6 secs (b), 36.04.7 secs (g), 120/100 metres hurdles 14.7 secs (b), 14.5 secs (g), 400 metres hurdles 54.1 secs (b), 63.3 secs (g), high jump 2.09 metres (b), 1.77 metres (g), long jump 7.22 metres (b), 5.97 metres (g), triple jump 15.16 metres (b), 12.60 metres (g), pole vault 4.97 metres (b), putt shot 17.17 metres (b), 16.60 metres (g), discuss throw 54.68 metres (b), 55.20 metres (g), javelin throw 70.64 metres (b), 53.55 metres (g).

The normal events will be worked off for the junior athletes boys and girls in other age groups under-12, under-14, under-16 and under-18. The top performance in the under-16 and under-18 will be much considered to be included into the junior international athletic pools.

Entries for the championships will close on May 20 with Bernard Perera, Assistant Secretary, Amateur Athletic Association of Sri Lanka, No. 33, Torrington Avenue, Colombo 7.
