Shayam Labrooy - biggest catch

by WILLIAM de ALWIS

The biggest fish hooked at last week's Open sea Trolling competition by the Sport Fishing Club - Sri Lanka was a 22.40 kg. Paraw by a mere stripling Shayam Labrooy, son of a former angler and waterpolo captain of Sri Lanka George Labrooy.

A remarkable feature of this year's event was that youngsters and comparative newcomers to the sport wrested the laurels from the older members, indicating a marked increase in enthusiasm the sport has been generating in recent years.

Fishing for the big ones with rod and flimsy low breaking-strain nylon line is certainly coming to its own again, says founder president of the club Dicky Delpachitra who broke away from the top post after a long run in favour of younger, newer blood after several years a few months ago.

The Sri Lanka Navy gave the Club permission to fish off the reefs around Colombo Harbour, a sporting gesture much appreciated by aficionados of the Rod and Line. However, Navy patrols kept a close watch to ensure that intruders were kept away from this high security stretch of sea.

Cast off was from the Palliyawatta Bridge, Hendala sharp at 6.30 a.m. boats with a total of 121 competitors were given a carefully monitored 6 hours of fishing. Return to the starting point was 1.30 p.m. and not a minute later.

They re-assembled for the weighing-in at the Pegasus Reef Hotel where tales of the big ones that got away were rife.

The award winners were: Shayam Labrooy, Shahan Meegama (they both hooked Paraw of almost the same weight - 22.40 and 22.20 kg respectively), Muwazi Thahir - Paraw 17.40, Ushan Gunesekera - Seer 13.20 kg., Russel Baptiste - Paraw 13.00 kg., Dr. P. Appuhamy Seer - 12.80 kg., Damith Wickramasinghe - Barracuda 12.60 kg., Darren Krause - 12.20 kg., Yohan Dissanayake - Paraw 11.20 kg., Adrian Perera - Barracuda 9.40 kg., Jonathan Martenstyn - Paraw 8.80 kg., Ranvel JNR - 9.80 kg., Dicky Delpachitra - Paraw 9.30 kg., Arjuna Perera - Seer 8.80 kg. and Ranvel Jnr. - Seer 8.60 kg.
