Rohana fails to impress at Thai Open tourney

by LAL GUNESEKERA

Sri Lanka's professional golfer, Anura Rohana, failed for the second time to make the "cut" at the 37th Thailand Open at the Krisade City Golf Hills Course last week. After the two qualifying rounds, Rohana, was 2 over par ("cut" was 2 under) with 3 over in the first-round and 1 under in the second.

This was a US dollar 150,000 tournament won by Edward Loar with a total of 19 under 269 (67, 66, 67, 69) with Australia's Jason Dawes (274) and Chinese Taipei's Chen Yuan-chi (275) in second and third places respectively. The other golfers came from Thailand, Myanmar, India, Singapore, South Africa, Japan, Canada, Malaysia and South Korea.

Earlier too, Rohana, failed to make the "cut" at the Qatar Masters, which was part of the European Tour, after being 42nd at the Myanmar Open at the Yangon Golf Club last month (March) and then finishing 14th out of 156 pros with a 6 under par 282 at the Royal Challenge Indian Open at Delhi also late March.

Rohana is now scheduled to play at the Maekyung LG Fachlon Open in Seoul, South Korea from May 1 to 4. This is a US dollar 400,000 tournament. He was also down to tee-off at the Vietnam Open from May 6 to 11 at the Ocean Dunes Golf Resort which was a US dollar 200,000 event, but it has been cancelled. Rohana's appearances for the rest of this year include the SK Telekom Open in South Korea which is a US dollar 400,000 tournament from May 22 to 25, Volvo China Open in Shanghai which is a US dollar 500,000 event from September 4 to 7, TCL China Classic from October 16 to 19 which is a US dollar 100,000 tournament, the Macau Open which is a US dollar 250,000 event from October 23 to 26, the Hero Honda Masters which is a US dollar 300,000 tournament in India from October 30 to November 2.

A spokesman for Rohana, told the Sunday Observer that if the Sri Lankan could get into the top 60, he can continue to play as a professional next year (2004) too, otherwise, he will again have to attend the Qualification School in Malaysia. He has to come within the top 40 to get into fully sanctioned events.
