Bolgoda Scull Regatta - a success The inaugural Bolgoda Scull Regatta organised by the University of Moratuwa Rowing Club was held on Saturday, 5th April 2003 on the Bolgoda Lake at the Ran Mal Holiday Resort, Moratuwa. This was the first time in the history of this sport in Sri Lanka that races of rowing were conducted on a straight 2000m course. This distance is the Olympic standard for rowing events whereas races held upto now in Sri Lanka have been held over a distance of 1000m on the Beira Lake. It was a great opportunity for the scullers of Sri Lanka to row non-stop for a distance of 2000m at the beautiful Bolgoda Lake. The chief guest for this regatta was the multi-faceted Chancellor of the University of Moratuwa, Vidya Jyothi Dr. Ray Wijewardena. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Moratuwa. Professor Dayantha Wijesekera was the guest of honour. Also present was the President of the Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka (ARASL) Mr. Alavi Mohammed. Incidentally, Dr. Ray Wijewardena and Mr. Alavi Mohammed were among the pioneer scullers to represent Ceylon. Isuru Perera of S. Thomas' College, Mt. Lavinia emerged the winner in the men's open category, while fellow Thomian Dejan de Zoysa was the runner-up. Dejan recorded the best timing of the day when he cruised home to win the men's Intermediate category in 9 minutes and 22 seconds. |
