by Elmo Leonard

Diesel and Motor Engineering Co Ltd (DIMO) commenced a road show in Colombo, of Tata vehicles manufactured in India. The show will go through Kandy, Matale, Dambulla, Anuradhapura, Trincomalee and Kurunegala and end in Galle on May 10.

The road show commenced at the Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre, Colombo with a range of 22 commercial and passenger vehicles, trucks, tippers, buses, pick-ups, SUVs and cars. DIMO's CEO, Ranjith Panditage claimed that it was the largest range of motor vehicles launched on one occasion in Sri Lanka.

DIMO expected to meet 3000 potential buyers in the next few weeks.

The Tata Indica, on display, is India's first and only locally designed and manufactured car. In a short time, it had become a leader in its segment and many new variants are planned, Tata Engineering India's Executive Director, Ravi Kant said.

The Tata Group of Companies is one of India's leading private sector conglomerates with total income topping $ 10 billion, Tata Director, R.V. Sumantran said. The group's income is equivalent to 2.4 per cent of India's GDP. It is one of India's largest net foreign exchange earners in the private sector, netting over $ 1.4 billion. It is India's largest private sector employer with over 200,000 people.

With over 135 models, Tata is the world's sixth largest vehicle manufacturer. It is also India's largest exporter of automobiles.

DIMO, Tata's authorised agent in Sri Lanka for over four decades, has ambitious plans to introduce many useful additions to the local market, DIMO Director, G. Panditage said.

Besides Tata, DIMO represents a portfolio of international giants such as Mercedes-Benz, Osram, Blaupunkt, Siemens, Bosch and Komatsu. DIMO, an associate company of Hayleys Ltd, is also the agent for MRF, Michelin and BF Goodrich tyres.
