Industrial fair to celebrate 40th anniversary

The Sri Lanka Chamber of Small Industries has organised the 'International Industrial Fair 2003' to celebrate its 40th anniversary.

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will inaugurate the fair on May 17. It will conclude on the 22nd.

A 65-member Indian delegation from Karnataka and Bangalore, led by Roshan Baig, Minister of Industries, comprising Ministry officials and business leaders of Karnataka, will be in Sri Lanka for the inauguration.

Fifteen Indian industrialists will exhibit products such as light engineering machinery, armatures for motors, vacuum cleaners, mixers, aluminium and steel castings, bolts and nuts, machine tool accessories, hydro power turbines, steel wire and hotel and bakery equipment.

They will also meet Board of Investment (BoI) officials to discuss joint ventures and visit the Katunayake Free Trade Zone during their stay here.

Prof. S. Saundranayagam of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, who will exhibit hydro power turbines, will deliver a lecture at the University of Moratuwa, Engineering Department, on the use of this equipment for small power generation units.

The organisers expect visitors, from Dubai, Sharjah, Qatar, Pakistan, Malaysia and Bangladesh for the fair.

Seventy Sri Lankan manufacturers are exhibiting in the main hall of the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Memorial Exhibition Centre, which is to be officially opened on May 17. This will be the first international fair to be held at the new exhibition centre.

The event is supported by the Ministry of Industries, Ministry of Enterprise Development, the BoI, Export Development Board and Industrial Development Board.

The chamber is also organising a carnival fun fair with musical shows every evening while the selection of the 'Karmantha Kumari' will take place at the main hall of the BMICH on May 22.
