Relocation of HSZ: LTTE concerns forwarded to government by Ramani Kangaraarachchi The concerns expressed LTTE Political Wing Leader Thamil Chelvam over the relocation of the High Security Zone have been forwarded to the Sri Lanka government negotiators by Defence Secretary Austin Fernando. Defence authorities last week decided to relocate the High Security Zone to an area close to the Jaffna Fort However the LTTE had opposed the relocation and given three reasons as to why the HSZ should be moved elsewhere. They include the said area being very close to government buildings such as Jaffna post office, fish market, cooperative shop, Telecom and Weerasingham hall which are heavily populated and therefore public objection to the proposal; it being against the ceasefire agreement which says that forces should be kept away from the public as much as possible and as people are disappointed over the relocation it would disturb the buildup of confidence between the two parties. Army Commander Lt. General Lional Balagalla confirmed the LTTE opposition by pointing out that the proposed plan was the best that the Army could think of. Defence Secretary Austin Fernando told the Sunday Observer that the final decision will be taken by the Government, once Minister Milinda Moragoda and Peace Secretary Bernard Goonatilake return to Sri Lanka next week. |
