Local engineering company secures major power project in Iraq

Vcom Heavy Engineers (Pvt) Ltd, a steel works provider, has secured a contract to reconstruct a power project in Iraq.

The multimillion dollar project was awarded to Vcom Heavy Engineers through a well-known company in the USA.

"The contract to rebuild the 10 power plants came through the branch in Oman. I will fly to Baghdad to sign the contracts shortly," said Chairman and Managing Director Jagath Navaratne.

"Some of the major locations that need our services are Al-Nasiriyah, Basra, Kirtuk, Mosul, Karballa and Al-Najaf. "I will be taking people from Sri Lanka to do the reconstruction work. This venture will provide employment to more than 1000 which will not only ease the problem of unemployment, but also bring in much needed foreign exchange to the country." Ten major power plants and 70 airports are lined up for immediate commencement of reconstruction in Iraq.

An estimated US$ 500 billion has been set aside for the entire operation of rebuilding the nation including renovating schools, hospitals, the road network and the harbour. Apart from these projects, Vcom has undertaken similar major projects in Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

The company provides all kinds of steel work for design, fabricating, installation and maintenance of steel structures such as tanks, thermal and gas turbine power plants, steam boilers and heat exchangers, and manufactures, repairs and services hydraulic pneumatic systems.

It is also engaged in heavy pipe installation, stainless steel fabrication, manufacturing of cement cylos, steel structural platforms and any type of gantry repair in the port and port operations as well as total fuel transfer systems which includes the manufacturing of diesel storage tanks.s Established in 1995, Vcom has branch offices in Singapore, Bangladesh and Oman while its head office is in Sri Lanka.
