Three development pools set up to improve netball by LESLIE FERNANDO The Interim Committee of the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka has set up three Development pools - umpires, coaches and players at district level for further development of the game. It is a long term plan for the promotion of netball in the island said Tamara Dharmakeerthi Herath, the chairperson of the Interim Committee of the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka. Already 56 umpires are in the Umpires Development pool. The pool will be pruned down to 30 after further training. The best and top umpires will be included into a panel and they will be able to get the International Umpires Badge, when they present themselves at umpires grading examinations conducted by the Asian and World Netball Federations. The coaches were selected according to their performances at school, club and at national levels by a three-member committee which consisted of Olivia Gamage, Sunimal Kurumbalapitiya and Latha Senanayake. The coaches will be able to follow coaching clinics conducted by several local and foreign coaches and they will be graded according to their performances. The top coaches will get the opportunity to coach the junior and senior pools. They will also be afforded the opportunity of travelling abroad to gain more experience in coaching. The Players Development pool will be spread to three age categories over-19, under-19 and under-15. The national netball coach Yasa Ramachandra, Chandanie Pathirana, Padma, Gunawardena and another reputed coach to be co-opted will be in charge of the players pool. The players who show promise gradually will be absorbed in to the national pool. The 12-member Sri Lanka netball team for the World Netball Championships to be held in Jamaica from July 10 to 20 will move to Katunayake, Air Force indoor stadium this week to begin their residential coaching camp under the national coach Yasa Ramachandra. The netballers commenced their training from May 21 at Sports Ministry ground, Torrington Avenue in the mornings and at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in the afternoons. According to coach Yasa Ramachandra, the pleyrs are in fine shape, playing as a unit and showing tremendous keeness to improve their playing skills. From this week, they will be together until the team leaves for Jamaica on July 6. Anoma Jayawardena, the Secretary of the Interim Committee of the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka has resigned from her post due to pressure of work. She is an Attorney-at-Law, practising in Kurunegala. A former Deputy President of the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka, Yasmin Dharmaratne is tipped to be appointed as Secretary by the Sports Minister according to an official of the Ministry of Sports. Two names - Suranganie Wijendran (nee de Silva) and Trixie Nanayakkara have been sent to the Sports Ministry for approval to manage the team for the World Netball Championships. |
