Realising 'e-Sri Lanka' vision

The 22nd National Information Technology Conference themed 'e-Sri Lanka, from Vision to Reality' will be held from July 3-4. The ceremonial inauguration will be held at the BMICH while the conference will take place at the Colombo Plaza.

The keynote address on 'e-Sri Lanka as a model for post-conflict societies' will be delivered by Chairman Development Infomatics USA Mark Fraser.

The papers to be presented on July 3 are 'Case study of an e-government portal: Transparency and public private partnership for governance in the digital world' by B. Yiu of Hewlett Packard (HP) Singapore; 'National IP backbone' by P. Undungodage of Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT), 'e-payments' by R.L. Hartung of Asiapay Solutions; 'The reality of digital government' by Prof V.K. Samaranayake, Director University of Colombo, School of Computing; 'Global e-science initiatives' by Dr A. Induruwa; 'The role of open source in e-Sri Lanka' by Dr S. Weerawarna of Lanka Software Foundation; 'The vishwa grama fund: An innovative funding mechanism to overcome rural ICT infrastructure bottlenecks' by Dr H. De Silva, Senior Consultant Economist Public Interest Program Unit MERST and MPDI; 'Future of IT in banking and finance' by C. Wattegama of Asiasoft; 'The role of venture capital in the ICT sector' by N. Weerasekera, Managing Director NextVentures; 'Taking ICT to rural Sri Lanka' by N. Wanninayake of Horizon School, Anuradhapura; 'e-Sri Lanka, a macro model for a triple jump' by Dr B. Ranasinghe, Chairman IDM Holdings; 'Technology options and solutions for e-networking' by Prof M. Pitke; and 'e-vision: The business factor' by S. Gamage, Supply Chain Consultant Venture Plus Consulting.

De Silva, IT Management Consultant; 'The future of Airports: A vision for the next generation' by M. Hilton of SITA; 'Assessing and benchmarking our digital readiness for e-government: Moving towards e-Sri Lanka' by Dr P. Kumarawadu, Head/Academic Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology; 'Blending presumptions with reality, Internet banking and commerce' by P. Kasturiratne of Sampath Bank; 'An e-learning application infrastructure model for effective on-line learning projects' Dr E. De Mel of QNET Software Research Laboratory; and 'e-Sri Lanka - Why health should be part of the roadmap' by Dr K. Mendis, Dr A. Pathemeshwaran and Dr A. Moragoda.

The main aim of selecting the theme was to focus on some practical aspects as the country gears up for the implementation of the ambitious 'e-Sri Lanka' vision. "We will analyse our readiness, look at technology, examine the infrastructure, identify societal applications, prepare ourselves for roadblocks and pitfalls, understand best practices and learn from the successes and failures of others at the conference," said a spokesman.

The event is organised by the Computer Society of Sri Lanka. The principal sponsor is HP while the strategic partner is SLT. The co-sponsors are IDM and ACS. Ceycom is the service provider while Colombo Plaza is the official hotel. The media sponsors are Daily news and Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation.
