Longest vessel calls Colombo The Wallenius-Wilhelmsen Lines (WWL) 'TOBA AM311' sailed into the Port of Colombo for the first time recently and berthed at the Jaya Container Terminal to uplift RORO units and containers destined to Masan, Korea. The vessel is 228 metres in length, extending up to 270 metres with the stern-starboard side ramp down, making the longest vessel overall to call Colombo. WWL constitutes the largest operators of RORO and car carrier vessels in the world, and by its acquisition in 2002 of Hyundai Merchant Marine's Car Carrier Division (operated under the brand name Eukor), it has become a giant in the car transportation industry. The line is responsible for the carriage of automobiles for some of the biggest names in the automotive industry. From vans, trucks, buses and tractors to agricultural and construction machinery, WWL can take care of any cargo up to 6.3 metres high and 300 tons in weight. Its distribution operations work closely with major car manufacturers and use intermodal methods and inter-regional logistic management combined with advanced tracking systems for transporting vehicles from production line to final destination. Wallenius-Wilhelmsen Line is locally represented by Barwil Meridian Navigation, a member of Barwil Agencies (a subsidiary of Wilhelmsen), operating 170 shipping agencies around the world. |
