Sri Lanka schools send largest-ever swimming contingent for Tamil Nadu aquatic dual by LESLIE FERNANDO Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Sports Association have picked 127 swimmers, 69 boys and 58 girls (the highest number of swimmers to compete in a meet abroad) to swim with Tamil Nadu in the second aquatic dual at the Orca Swimming Pool, Harrington Road, Chetput, Chennai (Madras) on July 12 and 13. The Tamil Nadu swimmers for the aquatic dual will be from Justice P. S. Kailasam Medical and Educational Research Foundation. The Madras District Aquatic Association affiliated to the Tamil Nadu State Aquatic Association will conduct the meet and will also host the Sri Lanka Schools swimmers. Dr. Sadayavel Kailasam, the Secretary of the Madras District Aquatic Association will be the chief co-ordinator of the meet. The swimmers will be seen in action in seven age groups and open both boys and girls and altogether 80 events in all four strokes, including the two individual medley events will be in the two-day programme. The events listed for boys and girls in the under-7, under-8, under-9 are: 25 metres back stroke, breast stroke, butterfly stroke, freestyle and 4 x 25 metres individual medley. The events for boys and girls under-13, under-15, under-17, under-19 and open: 50 metres back stroke, breast stroke, butterfly, free style and 4 x 50 metres individual medley. Sri Lanka Schools are expected to retain the overall championships trophy as the swimmers gained more experience swimming at the NAASU conducted Age Group Swimming Championships and the Schools Swimming Championships which conclude today (Sunday June 29). The swimmers, along with the officials and the parents of young swimmers will go in two batches on July 10 and 11. Dr. David Ponniah, Warden, S. Thomas' College, Mt. Lavinia and the President of Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Sports Association will be the Chef-de-Mission while Ms. Ranjani de Fonseka, Secretary SLSASA will be the Manageress. Philip Amerasinghe (S. Thomas' College), Ruwan Manawadu (St. Joseph's College), L. V. Fernando (Ananda) and Janaka Lal (P. de S. Kularatne MV) will be the coaches.
