Royal and Mahamaya in the lead in schools' swimming

Miniruwani Samarakoon of Gateway International School, Kandy, Kalyan Veera of Asian International School, Uma Kavya Dharmadasa of Musaeus College and Dharshaka Tennakoon of Ananda College accounted for a four more new meet records on the penultimate day of the 30th Sri Lanka Swimming Championships conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Sports Association and held at the Sugathadasa Stadium swimming pool yesterday.

Miniruwani, swimming in the girls under-11, 100 metres butterfly stroke set the first record 'clocking' 1.14.00 secs. It was her second record for the meet. On Friday, she 'broke' the 200 metres breast stroke timing 1.32.62 secs.Kalyan Veera smashed a 15-year-old record in the 100 metres freestyle boys under-19 with a time of 59.31 secs. He went past the previous mark by point 68 secs. Earlier record was by Josephine Nishantha de Costa in 1988 the time 1.00.09 secs. Uma was responsible for the third record in the girls under-15 4x50 metres individual medley timing 2.47.04 secs and the other record by Dharshaka in the 200 metres backstroke boys under-17 - 2.26.69 secs.

With yesterday's four records, the tally rose to 16. The other record breakers upto yesterday were: S.V.Gayan Buddhika (AIS) boys under-19 - 200 metres breast stroke 2.41.03 secs, Naveen Karunaratne (AIS) boys under-19 - 50 metres freestyle - 26.61 secs, M. K. Thamanagama (S. Thomas' College) boys under-15 - 50 metres freestyle 27.84 secs. C. Malimbada(Ananda) boys under-15 -100 metres breast stroke - 1.19.19 secs, Menaka de Silva (St. Bridget's Convent) girls under-19 - 50 metres freestyle - 29.38 secs, H. B. Unamboowa (Trinity) boys under-11 - 4 X 50 metres Individual Medley 2.53.75 secs and 100 metres back stroke - 1.16.90 secs. Kanitha Munasinghe (Prince of Wales) boys under 9 - 50 metres freestyle 37.02 secs.

Chathuri Abeykoon (Ladies College) girls under-15 50 metres frestyle 30.01 secs, Melissa Boange (Elizabeth Moir School) girls under-19-400 metres freestyle 5.35.25 secs and 200 metres back stroke - 2.50.42 secs. Royal College (197) and defending champions Mahamaya College, Kandy (315) were in front in the boys and girls overall championships. In the boys overall, Ananda, St. Joseph's College, Trinity and Asian International School followed while Ladies College, Bishop's, Musaeus and St. Bridget's Convent were in the fray.

Today is the last day of the meet and events will start from 8.00 a.m. There will be 58 relays in 4 x 50 metres and 4 x 100 metres medley relay, 4 x 50 and 4 x 100 metres free style relays in the boys and girls under-9, under-11, under-13, under-15, under-17 and under-19.

Karunasena Kodituwakku, Minister of Human Resource, Education and Cultural Affairs will be the chief guest today.
