LG Abans sponsor CH rugby by LAL GUNESEKERA LG Abans have broken new ground by entering the rugby arena for the first occasion. They are the sponsors of the CH & FC rugby side this year (2003) with a "very attractive package". General Manager of Abans Channa Pathirane a former Trinity ruggerite himself, said that they will initially sponsor CH only for this year, but may consider sponsoring them for another year or two and hoped that they (CH) will finish among the first two in the current Caltex 'A' Division League Championship. He further said that Abans are now on a massive sports promotion programme and are happy to be associated with the CH & FC who have a record of 140 years. LG Electronics have recently sponsored international sports events like the ICC tournaments including the Cricket World Cup, Mini World Cup and Football World Cup. Chairman of CH & FC, Iqbal "Horsey" Hassan, said that it was only 10 days ago that Rohan Abeykoon had informed him about Abans being prepared to sponsor CH rugby and thanked Ranjan Canagasabai (also a member of CH Rugby Committee) for making the break through. He said that they are enjoying a good season at the moment under Milinda Jayasinghe, having won seven out of eight games (losing only to Kandy 13-35) in the first-round of the Caltex League, and hoped that rugby at the CH will "hit the top" like in the past. Chairman of CH & FC's Rugby Committee Rohan Abeykoon, said that CH have embarked on a three-year plan to bring its rugby back to its "glory years" like in the late 1980's and early 1990's. He said that there has been a decline in performances in the last six to seven years, but this year, the plans are working well and hoped that CH will win the League and other titles on offer. He further said that CH were committed to develop the skills of the young players and have recruited schoolboy talent and 80 per cent of its team are under 24 years of age. He said: "The vision is not only for the club, but for the country too". The others who were present at a media briefing on Wednesday night were Ananda Cooray (Secretary of CH & FC), Shammi Silva (Vice Chairman of CH & FC), Dhammika Prasanna (Deputy General Manager of Abans) and Buddhika Dharmawardene also of Abans.
