Sri Lanka loses bid to host Junior Asian Rugby C'ships by Lal Gunesekera The Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) failed in their bid with the Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) to host the Junior Asian (Asiad) Championship in Colombo in December to Malaysia and the Philippines who will now jointly host it in the same period. The President of the SLRFU Mohan Balasuriya, made a strong case at the ARFU meeting held recently in Bangkok, Thailand to host the Junior Asiad in Colombo for the second time, but failed in his attempt to persuade the ARFU to host it in January. A spokesman for the SLRFU said that they (the SLRFU) wanted the Sri Lanka Tourist Board too, to get involved in this event where 12 countries will vie for honours. He said that accommodation for visiting players and officials at leading five-star hotels in Colombo during December was a problem because of heavy bookings due to the Winter season and this was the reason that the SLRFU wanted to host the Junior Asiad in Colombo in January. He further said that the managements of five-star hotels have indicated that their hotels may be available after mid January, but the ARFU due to "previous commitments" were not agreeable for this period to stage the event in Colombo, and this was the main reason that Malaysia and Philippines were selected to host the Junior Asiad in December. |
