Antonians beat Trinitians 22/10 by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN, Kandy Sports Cor. St. Anthony's College, Katugastota recorded their fifth successive rugby win over their traditional rivals Trinity College, Kandy, when they beat them by 22 points (2 goals, 1 try, 1 penalty) to 10 (1 goal, 1 penalty) in their inter-school rugby match played at Nittawela on Friday. At half-time, Antonians led 5-3. Antonians have been winning this match since 1999 and the five wins in-a-row may be a record for any school against Trinity who are famous for their rugby. Though there is a 12-point gap, this match turned out to be a closely contested affair in which no quarter was asked nor given. The Antonians showed more aggressiveness but the Trinitians countered this with a sound defence and did not allow them to go on a scoring spree. In fact till the final minute of play, the scores stood at 15-10 in favour of the Antonians before the winners put the icing on their cake of victory with the final try through winger Sumith Jagoda who had a good game scoring two tries. The other try was scored by centre Eranga Swarnatillake. Full back Sumal Wijesiri goalled two of these tries and also fired across the penalty. For the Trinitians, their lone saviour was full back Saliya Kumara who scored a fine try and goalled it himself and also fired the penalty. But he made a costly lapse when he missed a 'sitter' of a penalty mid way in the second half which could have boosted the morale of the lions. C. Amadoru refereed. Trinity won the junior game 27-10 and this was refereed by Ranil de Silva. |
