Isipatana beat S. Thomas' 20/7 by RANJAN ANANDAPPA A mid second-half burst by Isipatana sent the Thomians into submission as they recorded a pulsating 20 points (one goal, two tries and penalty) to 7 (a goal) win in their inter school rugger match played at Longden Place yesterday. The two teams met after five years and the first half did not produce anything spectacular. Both teams played enterprisingly in the first half running the ball, but lack of finish deprived both sides from scoring as the defence of both sides stood with some good tackling. Isipatana however, failed to forge ahead as they missed as many as four relatively easy penalties in the first half. Their play-maker and hooker Zendil Kumara held centre stage for a while. He missed the penalties but put over one to take a 3-0 lead at the breather. Thomian Isuru Fernando too, failed to put over a penalty and reduce the lead. In the second half of play Isipatana got their act together when hooker Zendil Kumara broke off, gathered the ball and kicked ahead and covered good eighty meters and fell over a fumbling Thomian fullback close to the touch line to give the winners their first try. Isipatana, playing in full steam, played exceptionally well with their forwards playing the supportive role and the backs giving the finishing touches to the moves which they lacked in the first half. The Thomians however, received a severe blow when their captain A. Karthelis were given marching orders by referee Anura Rankothge for rough play and was out of the scene for about ten minutes. Isipatana struck back once again with the power of their three quarters when winger Achintha de Costa gave the finishing touches to a fine three quarter move and Zendil Kumara added the extra points. The Thomians reduced the lead when their number eight Namal Rajapakse crashed through the Isipatana defence to score under the post which Wasim Thajudeen gave them the extra points. Isipatana then put the issue beyond their doubt when Chanaka Fonseka picked up a ball which was kicked ahead and scored. Isipatana beat S. Thomas' in the junior game 17-3. |
