For a brighter, cleaner light
by Panduka Senanayake 'Lassana Pahana', an environmental-friendly, locally produced wax lamp was recently introduced into the island by an Australian company in the Wathupitiwala Export Promotion Zone. Suitable for places of worship and homes, it is clean and gives a bright light and a pleasant aroma. Explaining its environmental-friendly properties, Sumana Jayalath, Managing Director Auslan International Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, the maker of the lamp, said it does not make the black smoke that a normal coconut oil lamp makes. Further, the wax base inside the clay lamp does not spill over. This prevents the oily mess that is usually found on the ground in places where oil lamps are lit in large numbers, such as places of religious worship. Jayalath pointed out that the lamp would be easier on the purse since it lasts up to four or six hours, which is much more than the lifetime of an average candle, which lasts for about 40 minutes. It is also recyclable because the clay container is left intact once the wax has run out. While the individually hand produced clay containers for the lamps turned out by village women-has compromised on uniformity, which currently prevents wax refills from being marketed, Jayalath hopes to solve this problem with Industrial Development Board assistance. The company, which started by producing mosquito repellent candles for the Australian market, also aims to introduce a similar product locally after obtaining the necessary clearance. Auslan International is currently looking for distributors islandwide for the 'Lassana Pahana'. |
