The enthusiasm shown by these young members of the choir to ensure that their performances, collectively and individually, ran smoothly for the pleasure of the audience was laudable. So too for their vocal talents which marked many surprises. Undoubtedly a lot of hard work had gone in before performance dates, when you consider that more than 60 choir members had to be accommodated on stage, quick colourful costume changes had to take place and the choreography planned to suit modern day youth. That they enjoyed themselves more in the medley of Abba songs was evident, but the show proved that they were equally at home singing the perennial gems from well known musicals. The opener a medley from Sound of Music was an impact and set the trend for the evening. Mention of praise also for the medley from Pocohantos and the finale the medley from Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dream Coat. The selection of songs for the programme reflected even pop trends like a acapella 'Killing Me Softly' and a swinging version of 'Something Stupid.' Ruwani Seiman must be congratulated for bringing out the best in the very talented Bridgetine choir. We cannot pass by without mentioning the musical support from a rhythm section led by Mahesh Denipitiya - keyboards, it was good to hear him after sometime, Billy Fernando - bass guitar, Kevin Batuge - drums. Piano accompaniment was by Kamalaini Samarakoon. |
