Swim trio off next Friday for World C'ships Three of Sri Lanka's leading swimmers Conrad Francis of St. Joseph's Swimming Club, Asela Pradeep of Sri Lanka Navy and Menaka de Silva of St. Bridget's Convent will leave on Friday, July 11 to participate in the FINA World Swimming Championships to be held from July 14 to 27 in Barcelona, Spain. The three swimmers were selected on the performances of NAASU conducted two trials held at the Sugathadasa Stadium swimming pool in April-May. They performed the best at the trials. Conrad who has swum at the Sydney Olympics and Asian Games will swim in four events 50 and 100 metres breast stroke and 50 and 100 metres butterfly stroke. Asela who has a wealth of experience in swimming at several international meets will swim in the 50 and 100 metres backstroke and 100 metres freestyle. Meanwhile the lone woman swimmer Menaka who also has swum in many international meets will be seen in action in the 50 and 100 metres freestyle. Rifdy Fahmy, a former Royal and national swimmer and the Secretary, National Amateur Aquatic Sport Union will be the Chef de Mission. Rifdy will also attend the FINA Congress to be held during the championships. Earlier NAASU President, Rear Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda was to go as the Chef de Mission but due to unavoidable circumstances will not go. Teruni Corea (presently out of the country on a private tour) a former Bishop's College and national swimmer will be the manageress cum coach. (L.F.) |
