S. Thomas' beat St. Peter's 15/6

by LESLIE FERNANDO

S. Thomas' College warded off a strong second half challenge to beat St. Peter's College by 15 points (a goal, a try, a penalty) to 6 points (2 penalties) in their Milo inter-school rugby encounter played at Havelock Park yesterday.

With this good win, S. Thomas' carried away the Archibald Perera Memorial Trophy.

The Thomians surged ahead in the 9th minute when scrum half Dinesh Siriwardena off a five-metre scrum, crashed through for a try but Wasim Thajudeen made no mistake with the conversion.

A brilliant 45-metre penalty by full-back Mohamed Sheriff enabled Peterites to reduce the lead to 7-3.

Just before 'lemons' Peterites full-back Mohamed Sheriff obliged with a penalty, and at half time Thomians had a slender 10-6 lead.

On resumption, S. Thomas' got the act together and played a tactical game to dominate all departments of the game.

Isuru Fernando kicked a penalty to make the Thomians 10-6 and with five minutes for the final whistle, Isuru Fernando scored a fine try but Wasim Thajudeen failed to add the extra points.

S. Thomas' also won the under-15 and under-17 games against the Peterites. S. Thomas' under-15 beat St. Peter's by 12 points to 11 and the under-17 side won by 14 points to nil.
