t-Bar for exotic teas

by Pelham Juriansz

The Dilmah 't-series' designer gourmet tea was introduced recently at the Trans Asia 'Goodies' shop. The hotel was the venue for the launch of the Dilmah t-Bar, Sri Lanka's first Quick Service Restaurant.

Tea is an obsession at Dilmah, and the family team of Merrill J. Fernando and his sons Dilhan and Malik have introduced teas that are cool enough for the new generation. Dilhan Fernando, introducing the tea, said that tea is almost infinite in its variety, spectacular in quality and throughout its 5000-year history, has been hailed as a medicine, a panacea for all ills.

"We are living in an age that promotes coffee as a drink. In contrast, Dilmah is trying to promote tea as a health beverage," he said. The first t-Bar serves hot and iced teas, accompanied by sweet and savory t-snacks.

If you like your tea, you can always buy some to take home - not in the usual packet, but in designer tin caddies. The Dilmah t-Bar exudes style with contemporary jazz music and hip decor.

The range of teas must be seen to be believed - Rose Congou, black tea with natural rose petals, Ceylon Full Green Tea, Dombagastalawa and Galle district tea among them. The appreciation of fine tea requires three senses - sight, smell and taste. All three must unite for teas like Dilmah which are delicate in flavour, requiring the combination of aroma, taste and sight to enjoy their true individuality.

Appreciating fine tea begins with the eye. Each tea has a remarkably different appearance when brewed.

Some of the teas promoted by Dilmah are Green Tea with Japanese Flowers, China Green Tea, Prince of Handy, Earl Grey Tea, Ceylon BOP Tea, Senoha Green Tea, Darjeeling and Nuwara Eliya Tea, Vanilla Ceylon Tea, Pure Camomile Flowers, Pure Peppermint Leaves, Rosehip with Hibiscus Flowers and Natural Ceylon Ginger Tea.
