Harnessing leadership skills in students by Pelham Juriansz Carson Cumberbatch and AIESEC, a global student organisation, organised a seminar for students titled 'Harnessing leadership skills in leaders of tomorrow' at the BMICH last week. The chief guest and keynote speaker was Dr Pakiasothy Saravanamuttu while the guest speaker was Dr W. Weerasuriya. Several other scholars were present to answer students' questions. Three hundred and thirty eight students from 52 schools islandwide participated. About eighty students from the North and East (including Kalmunai) took part. Mano Selvanathan, Chairman, Carson Cumberbatch said the main purpose of the seminar was to harness the students' talents and make them interact with students from different parts of the country. AIESEC spans more than 85 countries and territories in over 800 universities. Carsons was one of the first organisations to recognise AIESEC as a breeding ground for future leaders. The company has also been assisting AIESEC in its programmes from 2000, and has been AIESEC's 'National Branding and Visibility' partner for the past two years. Carsons had conducted an awareness programme for schoolchildren last year as well. Damitha Samarakoon of AIESEC told the media conference that schools from Jaffna and Batticaloa taking part in the event augurs well for the relationship between divided areas. AIESEC is a totally student-managed organisation. Sri Lanka has reached the top in several of AIESEC International's global rankings. The AIESEC experience is centred round its Global Internship Programme, which provides students with an opportunity to experience a different environment in another country that helps personal and professional growth. Sri Lanka has been nominated as the host for the organisation's International Presidents Meeting 2004. The local branch has already won the Excellence in Trainees Satisfaction Award 2002, the Progressive Country Award 2002 and Best Global Relative Exchange Growth Award 2002. |
