Elvis - not her cup of tea

A 'natural' on stage the star singer Dalreen confesses that the stage is her home.

Ever since she was a toddler music has been her soul. Her mother Decima put her on the right track and Dalreen enjoyed herself as a solo singer as a leader of her bands, as a recording artiste, and as a star performer here in Sri Lanka and abroad. A TV compere and producer, Dalreen presents the weekly half hour Music Unlimited on TNL.

Name: Dalreen Dolores Suby
Birthday: March 9

Fav colour: Black. Coming a close second is white or yellow.

Trendy outfits: I'm a very plain kind of person when it comes to fashion and dress. But I like to dress up with a lot of jewellery and I now like silver jewellery. I am fashion conscious but not to the extreme. Trendy outfits are good for the youngsters. For the older people, well, they had their day when they were young!

Hair do's: I have my hair long... I've grown it again. Actually I love hair wigs that are trendy and because I'm on stage and behind cameras and since I can't change my face, I like to have a new wig everyday!!

Fav music: Soul and rock. In the early years of my career I was rock oriented - performing songs of the popular rock groups of the time of Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and their contemporaries. Now there's Anastacia, Norah Jones and the Top 40 hits. Fav song from 80's & 90's: From the 80's it's Flash dance by Irene Cara and from the 90's Bette Midler's "From A Distance."

Are you a keen party girl: I'm not a party person - I'm not so good at that. Give me the stage any day. Once I'm on it - nothing bothers me at all. But at a party I get stuck for words. If a good looking guy singles me out to talk to me I get stuck for words and have to rack my brain for the next sentence of conversation!!

Are you superstitious: Only in certain instances. Like if I see a black cat I won't leave the house for any mission. Also if I forget to take something when I leave the house in the morning I won't return to get it. I proceed.

Are you a religious type: I have been with all the Gods and they've been kind to me! Religion has been with me ever since I was born - not something I've taken to. What's your pet hate: People talking behind my back, saying things that are untrue. I hate it. Sometimes I enjoy it, because I'm a good source of enjoyment.

When you are not performing what keeps you awake at night: My normal time to switch off is 2 a.m. I watch TV or a film. I've got used to it. I wake up at 5 in the morning to send Tahani off to school.

Which product would you most like to endorse: I have modelled for gold jewellery in New Delhi, for Nivea Cream and Ponds cold cream and face cream and also for cutex. Now I would like to endorse perfumes.

Where would you like to be most now: In India. I love India. I'm sure in my earlier birth I would have been an Indian! I love their costumes, their jewellery. In 2001 I performed in New Delhi for the New Year's Eve. I hope I will be able to go again.

What would you do if you ruled the world: I'll stop the war. I'm against it. Also I will abolish divorce - people must be able to live freely! I'll eliminate poverty see that everybody has enough to live - there will be no poor people only happy people - this is the main thing in life.

Fav food? Do you cook?: Sri Lankan - seer fish curry, parippu and pol sambol. Also Mexican food. I can cook only Sri Lankan food.

If you could change anything about yourself what would it be: I'm happy with myself. If I really have to change - then it would mean I have to be in the corporate world, more sober in dress. No I'm happy with myself.

The worst hit song: The Ketchup Song. The lyrics are not understandable. It's good for the under 10s.

If Elvis were still alive, what would he be doing: I dislike Elvis. As a teenager I was the President of the Cliff Richard Club. And as for Elvis he would have ended up like what has happened to Michael Jackson.

What other profession would you like to be in: The hospitality trade. Maybe, be a General Manager of a five star hotel. I like to be at the helm of an organisation and I enjoy being on my toes work wise.

Was it tough for you to arrive at this stage in your career: No, it has been easy for me from the word 'go.' I thank God for the talent he has blessed me with and the strength to carry on. My career has been on the rise all the way, in spite of all the "obsticles" that were put in my way!! I thank my fans for supporting me right through my successful career. We singers, we need them.
