A guitarist of a rare groove

There's no denying that Dylan Lye is Sri Lanka's top rung guitarist and now a legend too. But sadly for us, he works in Hong Kong as a free-lance guitarist. Yet that does not deter him from making frequent visits to his homeland, and giving music lovers the happiness of enjoying his guitar artistry.

A guitarist of a rare groove, Dylan as we all know launched off his professional music career with the Experiments managed by the late Marci Perera before he switched over to being a member of the famed Jetliners led by Mignonne in Sri Lanka and until the group's contract at Regent, Hong Kong ended in 1997. By the time you read this Dylan would have jetted back to Hong Kong to slip into his music work schedule that always gives him fulfilment in life.

What is wonderful about Dylan the guitarist is that he is an unassuming humble guy, who never wants to talk about his talent and not be critical of his colleagues. He is ever ready to play with other musicians, share his musical knowledge with them even though they may not be as accomplished as himself. As a senior musician his goal always as he tells us, is to uplift musicians by playing with them and giving them more confidence in expression.

Dylan Lye was in live action at many gigs around Colombo these past few weeks with a repertoire that stretches from pop, to blues, to Latin to jazz. It was sheer pleasure watching his eloquent fret work, his fingers flashing swiftly, now with sensitivity, now with vibrancy, many moods and virtuoso licks. An accomplished vocalist as well, he revels and excels in vocalese - the contemporary vocal expression of guitarists.

A self taught musician in his early years but now formally trained, Dylan reveals that his early influences were Howard Roberts, Joe Pass and George Benson. "Actually Raja Jalaldeen and Nizan Adahan were two guitarists I used to listen to keenly to widen my artistry. I learnt a lot from them. I still continue to listen. I'm learning all the time, a musician does not stop learning" comments Dylan Lye. We'll keep our fingers crossed that he makes a quick return!
