Code of Ethics: UNP to seek all party consensus by Don Asoka Wijewardena The United National Party (UNP), seeking a common consensus on its newly formulated 'Code of Ethics' will invite opposition parties to review the proposals and submit their recommendations prior to implementing the "ethics" as part of its streamlining process. Party General Secretary Senerath Kapukotuwa will be writing to opposition party leaders soon, explaining the 'Ethics' and the need for all parties to come to an agreement about disciplinary action taken against party members who contravene party regulations. Kapukotuwa, who is also a member of the UNP Disciplinary Committee, told the Sunday Observer that it was extremely important for the UNP to reach an agreement with the opposition parties before implementing the new set of ethics to ensure that politicians expelled from the UNP on disciplinary grounds do not continue to remain in politics by joining other parties. The 'Code of Ethics' formulated with the assistance of professional bodies was to be introduced at the party executive meeting in Embilipitiya, early this month but was postponed, after it was decided that the opposition parties should be consulted. The code is being introduced to maintain party discipline and prevent party members from abusing their position for personal gain. |
