LTTE 'studying' NE administration proposals by Ananth Palakidnar The LTTE is studying the latest government proposals for a Northeast interim administration with a positive outlook, and informed sources say a favourable response can be expected later this week . Fresh proposals on the interim administration to the Northeast was handed over to LTTE's Suppiah Paramu Thamilselvan by Norwegian special envoy Jon Westborg at the organisation's newly built peace secretariat in Kilinochchi on Thursday. The proposal, the third to be submitted since the LTTE walked out of the peace talks, is presently being studied by the LTTE hierarchy in Kilinochchi and further consultations are likely to be held with chief negotiator Dr. Anton Balasingham. A copy of the proposals was reportedly e-mailed to him in London soon after it was received by the LTTE, sources said. S. P. Thamilselvan is expected to take the proposals to an European country to meet Dr. Balasingham and discuss with him the suggestions to be included, sources said. Meanwhile, Thamilselvan in an interview with the Sunday Observer on the interim administration said that the previous proposals submitted to them by the government were far below their expectations. "We need an interim administration with substantial powers to handle the issues in the North and the East. The intended interim administration will expedite the process in rehabilitation and reconstruction activities and will also build up the credibility of the people with regard to the peace process," he said. At Thursday's press briefing Professor G. L. Peiris said it was premature for the government to expect a response from the LTTE within a few days, as it will take time for them to study the proposals, consult relevant persons and discuss the issue, before responding to the government. He also added that it was premature to discuss the content of the proposals before the government receive the LTTE's response. |
