Sri Lanka hard-fought 63/59 win over Antigua Sunil Abeyawardana from Jamaica KINGSTON, Jamaica, July 19: Sri Lanka put up a splendid performance to register a hard fought 63 goals to 59 win over Antigua in their 11th World netball championships rankings match played at the Jamaica indoor stadium. The Lankans built up a close 14-11 lead at the end of the first quarter despite missing a number of scoring opportunities. They consolidated their position thereafter and took a decisive 19-12 lead at the end of the second quarter. The Lankans rallied around through some superb team work and finished the third quarter ahead by 18 goals to 16. However, Sri Lanka failed to exploit the opposition fully during the latter stages of the game and were beaten 12-20 in the fourth and final quarter. Their early lead turned out to be crucial at the end as Antigua staged a fine late rally to reduce the margin. Sashika Samarasinghe again produced a magnificent performance and received good support from Damayanthi Jayatilleke, Gayathri Lankatilleke and Gishanthi Jayakody. In the other matches, Bermuda beat Hong Kong 46-43, Canada beat Cayman Islands 58-34, St. Vincent beat St. Lucia 45-44, Wales beat Scotland 32-27, USA beat Cooke Islands 62-38. |
