Army beat Police 30/20 in hard fought game

by LAL GUNESEKERA

Army won their second consecutive game in the second-round of the Caltex 'A' Division League Rugby Championship defeating Police by 30 points (3 goals, 3 penalties) to 20 (1 try, 5 penalties) after being led 13-14 at half time at Police Park yesterday. Army won the first-round game too (29-3).

It was a terrific battle for supremacy right from the start up to the 24th minute of the second session when the Soldiers took command to plant two tries to secure a hard fought win. They made far too many mistakes and in addition hardly ever ran the ball through their outsides with fly-half Ajith Pieris been far too slow.

Police, on the other hand, did very well. They did not possess any professionals from overseas, but held their own through some tough play by their heavy forwards. Two penalties were fired across by fly-half Dissanayake to put Police ahead 6-0 in the sixth minute, but a T. A. Silva penalty in the ninth minute and a superb try by flanker Karunaratne off a inside pass from scrum-half Naufer Rahim which was converted by T. A. Silva saw Army in the lead (10-6) in the 25th minute.

They stretched the lead to 13-6 five minutes later with another simple penalty by T. A. Silva, but Police reduced the lead to 11-13 through a try by prop Hewawasam who barged through off a line-out near Army's right corner flank. Dissanayake failed with this conversion in the 36th minute, but put them ahead four minutes later with a simple 20-metre penalty.

After the "turn around", Dissanayake again put Police further ahead with a 25-metre penalty (17-13) in the fourth minute, but in the 10th minute T. A. Silva fired across a 30-metre penalty for Army to reduce the lead (16-17). Police went ahead further three minutes later through another penalty by Dissanayake (20-16). That was it and Army after T. A. Silva had missed a 40-metre penalty in the 16th minute, went ahead when No. 8. One Okesene the Samoan broke off a five metre scrum to send second-rower Sithara Fernando over. Silva converted and Army led 23-20. Then in the 32nd minute, Army scored again with right Winger Naushard finishing off a move after T. A. Silva had formed the overlap and converted himself.

Today besides Kandy's match with CR Havelocks meet CH & FC at Havelock Park. Both are in the Cup category, while in the Plate, Air Force takes on Kurunegala RFC at Katunayake.
