Nestomalt-Dinamina marathon attracts top runners

by Chris Dhambarage

Some of the top long distance runners along with a number of promising schoolboys will be vying for honours at the 14th Nestomalt Dinamina marathon to be worked off on August 2 from Dambulla to Kekirawa.

The marathon is organised by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL) and sponsored by Nestle Lanka Limited. This event is conducted by the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka (AA) in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Police.

This marathon is even more significance because it is held at a time when the Athletic Association is planning to send a strong contingent for the World Half Marathon to be staged in Portugal later this year.

The Athletic Association is planning to form a marathon pool and they will closely monitor this event, the timings and the overall performances of the athletes.

Incidentally the Nestomalt Dinamina marathon have produced a number of top class marathon runners who have even made their mark at international level. Sarath Prasanna Gamage who represented the country at the last Olympic Games had the honour of winning the Nestomalt Dinamina marathon on more than a couple of occasions.

And quite fittingly Sarath Prasanna Gamage's participation for the Olympics Games was sponsored by Nestle Lanka Limited who are also the pioneers in the sponsorship of marathon in Sri Lanka. In addition several other top athletes like K. A. Karunaratne, Anurada Indrajith Cooray, B. K. L. Samarasinghe and Bandula Samarasinghe have also made an impact by winning the Nestomalt Dinamina marathon before representing the country.

Nestle Lanka Limited have also been associated with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports for the past five years where they are the sponsors of the national marathon. All competitors and the officials of the marathon have been insured by the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation.

This regional mini marathon will start from opposite the Dambulla Clock Tower at 2.30 p.m and will finish from opposite the Kekirawa Police Station covering a distance of 20 kilo metres. The awards presentation for the winners and the runners up will be held at the Kekirawa Public grounds followed by the Nestomalt Geethanjalee Musical Extravaganza.
