Telecom revises tariffs to enhance user benefits Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) will revise its telephone tariffs from September 1, with the approval of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka. This is the fifth and final tariff re-balancing exercise as stipulated in the shareholder's agreement signed by the Government and NTT Communications of Japan on August 5, 1997 as a prerequisite to the divesture of a 35 per cent stake of SLT to NTT. As per the tariff revision, the first 200 units per month will be free for all SLT customers. According to SLT, the revision will benefit domestic customers as it would enable them to free call time while minimising their monthly bills. Charges for units above 3000 will be reduced to Rs 2.50 per unit from the present Rs 3.50. The new rates will be: first block upto 200 call units - free of charge; second block from 201 to 1000 units - Rs 3.00 per unit; third block from 1001 to 3000 units - Rs 2.75 per unit; and final block of more than 3000 units - Rs 2.50 per unit. The discount time band, which is currently from 10.00pm to 5.00am, will be increased to from 9.00pm to 5.00am. This would also benefit Internet and data customers. SLT said that to facilitate these value-added benefits to customers, it is compelled to revise its phone rental charges. Accordingly, the monthly rental will be Rs 495 for residential customers and Rs 1,250 for business and official customers. "The increase is imperative at this stage to maintain the over 750,000 connections we have issued to customers islandwide," it said. |
