NCE awards recognize exports excellence by Elmo Leonard The National Chamber of Exporters of Sri Lanka (NCE) will hold its 11th Annual Export Awards presentation, aimed at recognising excellence in the field of exports, on August 15 at the Hilton Colombo. With the Presidential Export Awards stalled from 1994, the NCE Export Awards, limited to its membership of 450, holds sway as the sole and premier awards competition for exporters in the country. Such awards are presented in all developed and developing countries to encourage a crucial economic exercise, NCE's past president, Patrick Amarasinghe told the media. Amarasinghe with other exporters founded NCE in 1986 and championed the cause of exporters at a time when the government of the day said 'Export or Perish' while many bottlenecks existed in the export process. Pakistan, which does not hold an exporters competition, has requested NCE assistance to conduct such an event. NCE has asked for a fee to provide such assistance, Amarasinghe said. The Chamber received 132 applications this year, an increase of 30 per cent over last year, NCE's Chairman (Awards Committee), Kingsley Bernard said. Applications were invited under six sectors - agriculture, traditional and non-traditional; value added teas; industry; gems and jewellery; and service providers to exporters - which were again classified into small, medium, large and extra large divisions, NCE President, Felix Yahampath explained. There is an award for the most outstanding exporter in each sector. The other awards are the most outstanding exporter of the year, best woman exporter, best Sri Lankan brand exporter and an award for remarkable export growth. In selecting winners, the performance of applicants was evaluated using criteria such as export performance; market or product development; brand marketing and effective management of marketing and capital. The chief guest on the occasion will be ADB Country Director, John Cooney. The principal sponsors of event are Bank of Ceylon, DHL, Freight Links International (Pvt) Ltd, Mobitel, People's Bank, Sampath Bank, Sri Lanka Export Credit Insurance Corporation and Union Assurance. The sponsors are Expeditors Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, Lanka Orix Factoring, Lion Brewery (Ceylon) Ltd, National Development Bank, National Gem and Jewellery Authority, Seylan Bank, Sri Lanka Telecom, Sri Lanka Tea Board and Sri Lanka Exporter. The media sponsors are Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd and Rupavahini. |
