Forum for high-flyers The Management Club (TMC) is perhaps the only club in the world that provides a forum for professional managers to interact, socialise and network for development of their careers. TMC was established under the auspices of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) early last year on an idea of Fayaz Saleem who saw the need for a club for professional managers to meet, greet and interact. "When we launched TMC at the Galle Face Hotel in February 2001, we had 101 members. There has been no looking back since then," said Saleem. A main objective of TMC is managerial development. It is not a recreation or social club. It is a place for people who are interested in self-development through interacting and networking with a sense of fellowship. Saleem said Sri Lankans are a little backward in managerial development as people do not interact much though they are skilled and experienced. TMC gives all managers an opportunity to interact and share knowledge among each other. "At each meeting, we have management development programmes to impart knowledge to others, empower people and also create friendship." The club was recently converted to a limited liability company by passing a set of bylaws and a constitution. Under the new set-up, TMC will be governed by a board of management including a president elected by its members and six vice presidents nominated by the CMI Sri Lanka branch. Six directors nominated by the respective clubs and another six nominated by the president will also serve on the board. The two clubs of TMC (at Galle Face Hotel and Mount Lavinia Hotel) will be run by two separate executive committees that were selected at a special general meeting. The clubs will have their own programmes, but members of both clubs are free to participate in any event they wish. Board room facilities for meetings and lounge facilities for hosting their guests with substantial discount structures will be available at both hotels to all TMC members without restrictions. Social responsibility TMC has undertaken a project to make Sri Lanka a disabled-friendly nation. Membership criteria Membership of The Management Club is by invitation. Members of the Chartered Management Institute, UK (formerly Institute of Management, UK) will receive Ordinary Member status while non-CMI members who meet the membership criteria could obtain Associate Membership. Associate Membership is offered to members of professional institutes in the UK, members of Lankan professional institutes, degree holders, recognised management diploma holders and persons with a minimum of five years senior management experience in a recognised institute. Applications from prospective members are scrutinised and evaluated by the Membership Evaluation Committee and formally ratified by the Executive Committee before any new member is enlisted to the club. Member benefits TMC signed two Memoranda of Understanding with SriLankan Airlines and Hatton National Bank, thus bringing in more benefits to its members such as the facility of excess baggage and late check-in on SriLankan flights and a co-branded credit card with a photo identity from HNB. Members can also avail themselves of a special life insurance cover offered by Janashakthi Insurance Co Ltd at an attractive premium. They can enjoy a host of facilities at both Galle Face Hotel and Mt Lavinia Hotel, including air-conditioned board room and lounge facilities with discounts. Future The future holds even better prospects for TMC members as the Executive Committee is hopeful of extending the club to towns like Kandy, Galle and perhaps Trincomalee within the next year. TMC also plans to have reciprocal arrangements with clubs in the region, in countries such as Singapore, Malaysia and India and also Dubai in the future. A comprehensive membership directory, categorised under the different professions to which members belong and giving a listing of members of the Galle Face Hotel and Mt Lavinia Hotel clubs separately would be published by TMC shortly. Fayaz Saleem, a product of Trinity College, Kandy, is President of TMC and is in the unique profession of head hunting. He attributes his success to people whom he has met over the years. Athula Jayasekera, an old boy of Nalanda College, Colombo, is Chairman TMC Galle Face Hotel and is the Assistant General Manager (Business Development) of LB Finance. He attributes his success to hard work, dedication and honesty. Nilhan Mendis was educated at St Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia, manages a multinational forwarding company and is Chairman of TMC Mount Lavinia. The keys to his success are honesty, loyalty, dedication and hard work. |
