SLPA revenues, volumes up in 2003 1st half The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) generated a revenue of Rs. 8,425 million during the first half of 2003, against a revenue of Rs. 7,138 million during the first half of 2002, an 18 per cent growth. During the first half of the year, the Port of Colombo handled a container throughput of 930,594 TEUs as against 829,667 handled during the corresponding period last year, growth of 12.2 per cent. The transshipment volumes handled by the Port during this period grew by 13.5 per cent over the corresponding period of 2002. Some of the reforms carried out by the SLPA over the last few months are downsizing the workforce by 3,500 personnel, productivity enhancement the Jaya Container Terminal by 100-120 per cent, eliminating 'speed money' paid by shipping lines for over 25 years at the Port, 100 per cent worker attendance during May 1, New Year, Vesak and Christmas holidays, and forming terminal service agreements with shipping lines for the first time in its container handling history. JCT, the flagship container terminal in South Asia, recorded a transshipment volume growth of 16 per cent during the first half of 2003 as against the corresponding period last year, reflecting a strong positive co-relation between the reforms carried out and the surge in volumes. |
