UNP Gen. Secy. seeks Opposition help by Don Asoka Wijewardena The General Secretary of the United National Party Senerath Kapukotuwa has sought the assistance of various political parties to implement tough disciplinary action against politicians involved in corruption and various forms of violence. The UNP has proposed that all politicians found guilty of violating the code of behaviour, be suspended from the party for five years and has sought the assistance of other parties, to ensure that the suspended member does not join another party. UNP General Secretary has already written to General Secretaries of fourteen parties including PA, SLFP and JVP requesting their suggestions and comment to reach a common consensus on the move. UNP spokesman, Gayantha Karunatilaka MP, told the "Sunday Observer" that the newly appointed UNP Disciplinary Committee would adopt stern measures to punish its members found guilty of corruption. He also said that the party members who were convicted by the courts would be suspended from the party for at least five years. Most of the UNP members have welcomed the arrangement to be included in the code of ethics. MP Karunatilaka commenting on habit of political parties to welcome any politician expelled or suspended from another party, said that the new Disciplinary Committee was looking forward to reach a common agreement with all other political parties to prevent such cross overs. |
