OBSERVER-BATA Schoolboy Cricketer : Maharoof captains Sri Lanka u-19 vs Pakistan

OBSERVER-BATA choolboy Cricketer of the Year for 2003 - Farveez Maharoof of Wesley College has been picked to captain the Sri Lanka under-19 cricket team in the matches against Pakistan under-19 team that will make a tour of Sri Lanka later this month.

While Maharoof will captain the Sri Lanka under-19 team, also included in the squad of 20 players is Chinthaka Rasanga Perera - the OBSERVER-BATA Outstation Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year for 2003 which goes to show that the selections by the panel of umpires in the contest have been duly recognised and given prominence.

Maharoof is presently playing for Stanmore in the County League in England. He figured prominently with the bat and ball for Stanmore in the Middlesex County League, scoring heavily and capturing wickets.

Wesleyite Maharoof won the Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year award 2003 and was also picked as the Best Batsman All-Island and also figured prominently in the final round of the Best Bowler, Best All-rounder and Bet Captain awards.

This season, he scored 845 runs which included two centuries against Ananda and Nalanda and five half centuries. He has also bagged 42 wickets. He also played a few games for CCC in the under-23 tournament.

Chinthaka Rasanga Perera of President's College, Kotte, besides winning the 'plum' of outstation cricket, was also picked as the Best Bowler and Best All-rounder.

He is a fine right-arm 'pacie' and has captured 81 wickets for the season. His best was 14 for 142 against Lumbini MV (match bag).

Chinthaka is also a capable batsman scoring 350 runs. He also plays for Chilaw Marians in the BCCSL under-23 tournament.

Upul Tharanga of Dharmasoka College Ambalangoda, Kaushal Silva of S. Thomas', Mt. Lavinia, Gihan de Silva of St. Peter's College, Kosala Kulasekera of Vidyartha College Kandy, Suraj Mohamed of Rahula College Matara, Ganganath Ratnayake of Royal College, and Salia Saman of Revatha College who figured in the OBSERVER-BATA Schoolboy Cricketer Contest are also included in the Sri Lanka under-19 cricket team to play against the Pakistan under-19 team.

Captain), Upul Tharanga (Dharmasoka College), Damindu Kularathne (Ananda College), Thilina Masmulla (Thurstan College), Kaushal Silva (S. Thomas' College, Mt. Lavinia), Gihan de Silva (St. Peter's College), Sudeera Soysa (D.S. Senanayake College), Dunil Abeydeera (St. Sebastian's College), Suraj Mohamed (Rahula College, Matara), Chandika Ranatunga (Karandeniya Central), Manoj Chanaka (Royal College, Panadura), Chinthaka Rasanga Perera (President's College), Tharaka Kottehewa (Royal College), Angelo Matthews and Sandun Dias (both St. Joseph's College), Nadeera Nawela (Kalutara Vidyalaya), Kosala Kulasekera (Vidyartha College), Isuru Perera (Maris Stella College), Saliya Saman (Revatha College).
