S. Thomas' and Wesley cruise into semis

by RANJAN ANANDAPPA

S.Thomas' and Wesley cruised into the semi-finals, beating St.Peter's and Ananda respectively in their 'Milo' sponsored schools under 19 President's Trophy rugger quarter-final matches played at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

The Thomians beat an unimpressive Peterite side by 27 points (One goal, four tries) to 10 (Two tries) after a 12-5 lead at the 'breather'.

For the Thomians, skipper and flanker Ashen Karthelis, winger A. Kohanna and scrum half H. M. Siriwardena scored a try each while number 8 Namal Rajapakse touched down twice for the winners,

In the other quarter-final match between Ananda and Wesley, Ananda started off well, making daring advances into the Wesley territory but were unable to score due to lack of finish. Ananda dominated the entire first half with some effective moves and took the lead when fullback Pradeep Tharuranga put over a penalty. Yasas Nonis fired over a penalty for Wesley to make the scores 3-3 at the breather.

Wesley got their act together on resumption and Ananda could not apply the breaks on the marauding Wesleyites. Winger Zacky Badurdeen twice ran to cover good ground to touch down twice and Niranjan Wickremaratne scored for the Wesleyites. Yasas Nonis added the extra points for Wesley.

Dilroy Fernando and A. C. Tennekoon refereed.
