Celebrating 15 years of revolution in banking Sampath Bank celebrated 15 years of pioneering multi-point Networked Automated Teller Machines (ATM) in Sri Lanka. The bank was the forerunner in introducing technologically advanced, innovative products and services to local banking customers. Sampath Bank extended banking hours upto 3.00pm from the previous 1.00pm to help customers. The Sampath Electronic Teller (SET) card was the first to be introduced as an ATM card with emphasis on networking. This initiative also introduced the concept of 24-hour electronic banking in the country. The bank then added value to the card by doubling it as a debit card with the Cirrus/Maestro facility, enabling cardholders to use it for transactions not only on the local 'SET' network, but also globally on over 890,000 Cirrus ATMs. It could also be used to pay for purchases at over five million Maestro Point Of Sale (POS) terminals at merchant sites locally and abroad. In Sri Lanka, the SET card can be used at over 330 ATMs and over 1000 Maestro POS terminals located at merchant sites including petrol stations, supermarkets and grocery stores. Anil Amarasooriya, Managing Director and CEO Sampath Bank said the bank, formed 16 years ago, introduced customer services to the country. "When cutting edge technology was taking the world by storm, we introduced global innovations, hitherto unseen in our country. On an average, more than 25,000 SET card transactions take place daily, which is more than 1,000 transactions per hour, nearly 20 per minute or one every three seconds,"he said. Sampath Bank has won many awards both at local and international levels. The latest was the National HRM Award - Services Sector (Large Category) 2002. (PJ) |
