Galway Miridiya Lodge : The star in the Cultural Triangle by BEVERLEY JANSZ Overlooking the beautiful Nuwarawewa Tank and the world famous Mihintale Rock, Galway Miridiya Lodge is certainly a tourist paradise in the Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka.
Miridiya was originally built as twin houses. In 1968 with the incentives offered for tourism, it was converted to a hotel by connecting the passage between the houses and building a restaurant in front and kitchen behind. This was followed by building a new 10-room block, and a 22-room hotel was opened in 1970. In 1973 another 8 rooms were added with the assistance of TUI and in 1975 the hotel was expanded to a 39-room hotel with a large restaurant and public area. Since Galway Hotel Management Services, Rajagiriya bought over the hotel, a massive refurbishment has been done and the hotel has been upgraded to a star class hotel with all modern facilities. All rooms have been tastefully refurbished. The land stretching up to 2 acres on which the hotel stands, has been beautifully landscaped and it now resembles a botanical garden. It blends with the Nuwarawewa Tank reservation which overlooks the hotel. Galway Miridiya Lodge offers 39 AC rooms with all modern facilities. The hotel has a large and beautiful pool. From the main restaurant, guests can get a panoramic view of the blue waters of the Nuwarawewa Tank and the Mihintale Rock. The main hall at the hotel could accommodate over 200 guests and therefore it has become a popular venue for weddings, seminars, company picnics etc. The 'theme nights' and the daily Sri Lankan lunch buffet which includes a variety of delicious Western cuisine too have become very popular among tourists and Sri Lankans visiting Anuradhapura. Over 92 species of birds have been identified in the hotel compound and the hotel has become a popular venue for bird watching. 'We are promoting eco-tourism in a big way'. The new Executive Resident Manager, Tyrell Morrison said. With Morrison's expertise as a veteran hotelier there is no doubt that Galway Miridiya Lodge will shine as a star class tourist hotel in the Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka. Galway Miridiya Villa Galway Hotel Management Services Ltd., CEO, Ken Pieris said that another 'star' will be added to its chain shortly when it will open the Galway Miridiya Villa at old Mihintale Road, overlooking Jethawanaramaya, in Anuradhapura. Surrounded by luck greenery and paddy fields, Galway Miridiya Villa offers 12 guest rooms with all modern facilities including TV, air conditioning, piped minute etc. The Villa is just five minutes drive from the Anuradhapura town, taking a left turn from the Jaffna road junction, Anuradhapura. |
