Mirror, mirror on the wall ...

byLAKMAL WELABADA

'Mirror on the wall'.... The magical reflection of small pieces of mirror is a fascinating material used for interior decor.

Maheshi Munasinghe.

Mingling the little reflectors with jute and ekel, Maheshi Munasinghe, an interior designer has done some entrancing wall hangings and screens for her forthcoming exhibition which will be held at the Lionel Wendt on September 6 and 7 from 9.00 am to 8.00 pm.

Maheshi, an ex-student of Ladies' College, Colombo has mastered interior designing through a two-year correspondence course conducted by the Sheifield School of Interior Designing, USA.

"Mirrors fascinated me since I was a little girl. So using it as a material in my interior decor has come my way eventually. My idea in this, is to bring outdoor greenness into the interior through the reflection of a 'well placed mirror'," said Maheshi.

"To make it more attractive we use cut pieces of mirrors of different shapes on a dull surface when using 'mirrors' as an interior decor," she said.

"I use jute as the medium to paste the mirror pieces. The plain surface of jute is first decorated with mirror pieces according to the design that is in my mind. And then a weaving work with gunny thread is done to suit the design. This gunny thread is sometimes coloured with normal dyes (before the weaving) to enhance the enthralling design."

"A normal mirror cutter is used to cut mirrors, and a see-through gum called 'Zilicon' is used to paste the mirror pieces and other pasting processes of the same decor."

"The coconut ekel work ('Pol Iratu') is also a time consuming job requiring patience. First, ekel is treated with a wood preservative.

And once they are pasted onto the gunny surface as the picture shows, a coating of varnish is applied on it for further preservation. "Ekel is a good material as it lasts long without getting decayed once it is preserved," says Maheshi.

The exhibition of mirror decor will also have pottery, fabric paintings and Egyptian art done by Maheshi and her sister Gitani.
