Take speedy action to bring all offenders to book - Interior Minister

Minister of Interior, John Amaratunga has requested the Police to take speedy action to bring all offenders to book. He made this request at a Conference held in the Committee room of Parliament, attended by Mr. T. E. Anandarajah, IGP. DIGG, SPP, ASPP, HQII and OICC of the Police Stations in Wayamba and North Central Province were also present at the occasion.

This emergency meeting was summoned by the Minister of Interior after several complaints made by the Members of Parliament of Kurunegala, Puttalam, Anuradhapura, Galle, Matara and other Districts.

The DIG Wayamba on being questioned by the Members of Parliament admitted, that the crime rate has increased in the North Western Province, particularly in Puttalam area. He said action is been taken to bring the offenders to book.

Minister of Parliamentary Affairs A. H. M. Azwer said that it is a sad reflection on the Police so far that the perpetrators of crimes such as threat of arson and even murder have gone unchecked and as a result the most peaceful people live in fear having complained to the Puttalam Police. Even the farm belonging to the Actg. Chairman of Puttalam UC has been completely burnt down and ten Computers donated by the World Bank to the Puttalam Hindu Tamil Maha Vidyalayam have been robbed and even certain murders have been committed in the recent past. The Puttalam District MPP also brought to the notice of the Minister, that it is difficult to work with certain Officers at Chillaw Police Station and as a result, people in the area have been receiving Police harassment rather than help and assistance. They also insist that action be taken to remedy this situation.

Several Members of Parliament from the North Central and Southern Province and other Members belonging to the all parties also gave details of complaints made by them from time to time against Police personnel in their area.

Police officers who have discharged their duties to maintain law and order also were commended and were complimented by the several Members of Parliament who attended this Security Conference. The meeting was attended by Ministers H. G. P. Nelson, A. H. M. Azwer, P. Harrison, Lal Dharmapriya Gamage, MPP Neomal Perera, Larine Perera, Palitha Ranga Bandara, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, D. M. Dassanayake, Dilan Perera, M. K. D. S. Gunasekara and Bimal Ratnayake were among others who were present at this Conference.
