'Sarasavi Saviya' jobs for unemployed grads

"Sarasavi Saviya", new Youth Employment Network, established to solve the unemployment problem of graduates, will be implemented from September 16. Under this programme, the Ministry of Employment and Labour will absorb unemployed graduates to both private sector and public sector organisations for one-year training in various fields of administration with a view to providing them with jobs. The World Bank (WB) has funded US dollars 11 million for the programme.

Additional Secretary Ministry of Labour, M. A. R. D. Jayatilaka, told the "Sunday Observer" that the Tharuna Aruna programme initiated in 1997 was not so effective since there was no agreement with either state or private sector organisations to employ trained graduates. But under the "Sarasavi Saviya" programme, around 10,000 unemployed graduates would be recruited to both State and private sector organisations. Each trainee would receive Rs. 4,000 from a government and Rs. 2,000 from a private sector organisation respectively during the training period.

Mr. Jayatilaka said that there were around 27,000 unemployed graduates in the country and, of them, about 18,000 had specialised in their degrees. He said that a special task force comprising academics and leading employers appointed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had realised that on-the-job training for each and every graduate was imperative for right employment. "The most important thing in 'Sarasavi Saviya' is that we recruit graduates to organisations for necessary training on condition that they are employed after successful completion of the required training," said Jayatilaka.

Chief Operations Manager (Sarasavi Saviya), Ranjith Arandara, said that there was a positive response from public sector organisations such as Bank of Ceylon and People's Bank to recruit unemployed graduates for on-the-job training programmes and employ them in various fields.
