Mystery over 'Ambiga' murder

by JAYAMPATHY JAYASINGHE

Mystery surrounds the death of Thomas Susai Gnanasekeram alias "Ambiga", the notorious underworld character from Colombo. He was shot dead near Baseline road junction near the turn off from Kolonnawa to Colombo by an unknown gunman on Thursday night. Gnanasekeram was travelling in a car with six of his companions when he was killed, police said.

The shooting took place around 8.30. p.m. when the car came to a halt near the traffic lights. The gunman who had been trailing Ambiga's vehicle had opened fire and escaped in a three wheeler parked on Albion road. Ambiga, as he was known among his friends, was the third accused in the Nalanda Ellawella murder case and was in remand for more than two years.

He was granted bail recently and reportedly seen in several hot spots in Colombo. The Colombo Crime Division (CCD) had arrested him previously for possessing illegal firearms and for numerous other offences.

"He was a lone operator, but made a fortune by working with the Nawala Nihal's gang" police said.

The Colombo Crime Division under the supervision of SSP, Sarath Lugoda have detailed four teams to track down the killer.
