Army 'A', Air Force 'A' and Navy 'A' joint champs at Caltex boxing meet

Sri Lanka Army 'A', Air Force 'A' and Navy 'A' emerged joint champions at the Caltex Boxing Meet 2003 concluded at the Sri Lanka Military Academy hall last week.

This is the first time in the history of boxing that three service teams emerged champions. Earlier, there had been four years where there had been joint champions of two teams. The first being in 1929 where Royal Navy and Ceylon Police emerged joint champions, in 1970 Royal Ceylon Air Force and Zahira Boxing Club , 1971 Sri Lanka Air Force and Sri Lanka Army and in 1980 Sri Lanka Navy and YMCA.

This meet was organised by the Sri Lanka Military Academy in association with the Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka. Mr. Kishu Gomes, Managing Director of Caltex Lubricants Lanka Limited was the chief guest and gave away the trophies.

The President of the ABASL Mr. Jayakumar Thangavelu and the Secretary Brigadier J. Jayasuriya also graced the occasion.

T. D. N. Samaranayake of the Sri Lanka Army 'A' who beat B. Wickramasinghe of Slimline SC in the Light Flyweight under 48 kgs was adjudged as Best Boxer in the meet.

Results

Light flyweight under 48 kgs - Champion: T. D. N. Samaranayake (Army A), runner-up: B. Wickramasinghe (Slimline SC).

Flyweight under 51 kgs - Champion: H. P. Jayantha Kumara (Army A), runner-up: M. A. Rode (Navy A).

Bantamweight under 54 kgs - Champion: M. M. D. Paris (SLAF A), runner-up: D. M. P. S. Ratnayake (Pilimathalawa BC).

Featherweight under 57 kgs - Champion: A. K. G. K. Sameera (Unichela SC), runner-up: R. M. U. Bandara (Slimline SC).

Lightweight under 60 kgs - Champion: K. K. Jayasundara (Navy A), runner-up: Y. U. G. S. Wijetunga (Army B).

Light welterweight under 64 kgs - Champion: S. P. C. S. Jayathilaka (Army B), runner-up: S. I. Kumara (Slimline SC).

Welterweight under 69 kgs - Champion: K. C. S. C. K. Perera (SLAF A), runner-up: M. A. Divaratna (Army C).

Middleweight under 75 kgs - Champion: R. H. Hettiarachchie (Slimline SC), runner-up: V. L. N. Suwaris (SLAF A).

Light Heavyweight under 81 kgs: Champion: R. M. S. N. Bandara (SLAF A), runner-up: T. H. Eric Perera (Police C).

Heavyweight under 91 kgs - Champion: R. K. Sumith Prasanna (Army A), runner-up: N. K. S. de Silva (Army B).

Super Heavyweight over 91 kgs - Champion: D. P. M. H. Dharmasiri (Navy A), runner-up: H. A. C. Hettiarachchie (Army A).
