Franklyn and Dinali defend singles titles at Tennis Nationals The 88th National Championship of the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA), which is the oldest event in its calendar, will commence tomorrow (Monday) at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Greenpath sponsored by F & G Property Developers and Fingara Club, where over 300 entries have been received. The tournament ends on September 7. The President of the SLTA, Suresh Subramaniam, said that he was very happy that F & G Property Developers and Fingara Club decided to invest in sport and tennis in particular. He said that the development work put in by the SLTA is beginning to bring results and that the sponsors have done wisely to link up with SLTA. Last year (2002), 14-year-old Franklyn Emmanual became the youngest ever to win the Men's Open Singles title, and will face some stiff challenges from Renouk Wijemanne who is trying to reclaim the title which he lost last year to Emmanual. He is now in Colombo on vacation from USA. The other challengers are Rajiv Rajapakse (No. 1 in Sri Lanka Davis Cup squad), veteran Rohan de Silva and the "Teenage Brigade" comprising Oshada Wijemanne, Narshana Godamanne and S. Nishendran. Dinali de Silva has also returned from the USA to defend her Women's Open Singles title. She beat 14-year-old Jancy Paramanathan in last year's final. However, the latter has opted out this year. The threat to Dinali de Silva will come from 17-year-old Mahesha Seneviratne from Bishop's College and 15-year-old Thiyuni Abeysinghe from Visakha, who won three singles titles at the recent Colombo Championship. |
