KAFL gets sponsorship package from Chanaka Ailapperuma by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN, Kandy Sports Corr Chief Organiser of the UNP for the Senkadagala electorate - Chanaka Ailapperuma gave Kandy's soccer the much needed life support when he handed over a handsome sponsorship package from his personal funds to the Kandy Association Football League (KAFL) for conducting of the Inter-Club Soccer Tournament for 2003 at a ceremony held at Queens Hotel, Kandy recently. He handed over the sponsorship cheque to the Senior Vice-President of the Kandy Association Football League Maurice Perera. Chanaka Ailapperuma said that being an Old Trinitian, his first love has been rugby, but considering the plight soccer is now in, he decided to throw his lot with the poor man's game. This is not all and he volunteered to speak to various organisations and get more sponsorship packages to put soccer on healthy ground. Chanaka Ailapperuma speaking further said that he had just heard some jealous individuals with vested interest had telephoned the members of the Football League that this function had been cancelled which is wrong and they must find out who these saboteurs are and take necessary remedial action. Discipline is essential for any sport to survive, both as a recreation and also financially. Kandy Sports Club is making gigantic progress in the field of rugby and naturally sponsors will be forthcoming readily to help that club. We must be proud of the achievements of Kandy Sports Club in the field of rugby. He assured that he will speak to the Minister of Sports Johnston Fernando and try to get the ground hire charges of the Bogambara Stadium reduced for soccer as it is exorbitant at present. Senior Vice-President of KAFL Maurice Perera thanked Chanaka Ailapperuma for coming forward to help the League in time of distress. Sri Lanka has a good future in soccer, if only proper attention is paid. Our players have the skills to produce Pele's and Maradona's. In soccer, it is the brains not the brawn which is required. With the sponsorship given by Chanaka Ailapperuma, they can now kick-off the current year's tournaments which have been held up due to lack of funds, added Maurice Perera. Sarath Wijesinghe, S. A. Weerasinghe (District Coach), Upananda Jayasundera and Tikiri Ambagaspitiya also spoke. |
