Commerce Ministry makes high-tech move

The Ministry of Commerce and Consumer Affairs pioneered another venture last week by becoming the first ministry to have an Intranet to connect all relevant departments. It also conducted video conferencing with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Sri Lankan Embassy in Japan.

The Prime Minister, International Monetary Fund Resident Representative Jeremy Carter and Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Ravi Karunanayaka were connected live via video conferencing between Temple Trees and the Ministry premises at Rakshana Mandiraya.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe congratulated Minister Karunanayaka for taking the innovative step of becoming the first public sector organisation to be linked to the outside world via an EDI link.

He described it as a pioneering venture which will no doubt increase speed and connectivity.

Carter said: "The process can cut down on unnecessary expenses as better and speedy service is the main aim".

The Minister said: "This is keeping in line with the government policy of becoming technology-enabled and getting connected to the outside world. Though we are in the third world, we can relate to the first world by becoming technology oriented.

"We can also cut down on unnecessary expenditure and pass these benefits to the masses."

Trade Counsellor of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Japan Upekha Samaratunga also spoke via video conferencing with the minister.

Meanwhile, the Commerce and Consumer Affairs Ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion, will conduct the National Awards for Export Excellence 2003 in December.

The highlight of the awards ceremony will be the presentation of special awards to significant exporters of Sri Lankan products and commercialised local inventions.
