Hope for women in the North

A team of National Development Bank (NDB) and Seva Lanka Foundation officials visited the North recently to conduct a needs assessment study prior to implementation of a project which the NDB will manage on behalf of the World Bank and the Government.

They stopped at Sinnamadu in Kytes, Colombututrai in Jaffna, Wallipuram in Vadamarachchi and Attaria in Thenmarachchi.

The Seva Lanka Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, engaged in resettlement and women's empowerment in the Northern and Eastern parts of the island, coordinated these visits. The NDB has signed an agreement with Seva Lanka operating in the North and East, who will carry out the grass root level implementation. The three districts identified in the North and East will receive Rs. 42 million under this grant.

The project is titled 'Empowering the poorest of the poor women and girls in Sri Lanka' and is to be funded through a grant of US$ 900,000 made available to the Government from the Japan Social Development Fund.

One of its key objectives is to assist the most vulnerable groups of women and girls in the Vavuniya, Jaffna and Trincomalee districts, to strengthen their income generating capacities and enhance female participation in economic activities. Income generating ventures for the women will be centred on key activities that have been identified.

Training for these key activities will focus on starting and managing self-employment projects, improved agricultural farming and dairy practices, women leadership development and initiating and managing savings and revolving credit facilities. It will also focus on women's group formation and participatory needs assessment. Construction and renovation of agro wells and drinking water wells, and renovation and re-establishment of village markets will be implemented under community-based events.
