Matara comes alive with Yuga Dekma by Hiran H. Senewiratne The entrepreneurship-savvy Southern town of Matara has come alive with the Yuga Dekma 2003 mega industrial exhibition organised by the Ministry of Industries. This is the follow-up to the highly successful Yuga Dekma 2002, held in Trincomalee last year. The week-long exhibition is currently in progress at the Sanath Jayasuriya Cricket Stadium, and will conclude on September 11. "The event will give a major development breakthrough to the Southern Province," said Industries Minister Rohitha Bogollagama. The main objective of the exhibition is to take industrialisation to village level and this year's focus is to give the benefits of development to the people of the South, he added. Indian IT guru, Narayan Murthy, Chairman of Infosys will participate as a special guest and will declare open the new Nippolac paint factory along with Minister Bogollagama today. The factory at Matara would generate 400 employment opportunities. The Minister also emphasised that Yuga Dekma 2003 is an opportunity to celebrate the country's spirit of enterprise and herald the new era of economic development under the present government. There are more than 300 stalls including those of Board of Investment companies. Over 1.2 million people are expected to visit the week-long exhibition. The Minister said more than Rs 700 million will circulate during the seven days with musical shows, food festivals and entertainment, with 100 per cent private sector involvement. |
